Dialogue Forum on Internet Rights 2 – Cagliari, Sardinia
The Dialogue Forum on Internet Rights 2 (DFIR2), which will be held on 24 October, is meant as a follow-up to the first edition of this initiative, which took place in Rome in 2007. Its aim is to keep up the international discussion process – officially launched by Italy, together with other actors, during the Athens IGF – to define a shared set of principles able to steer the democratic and inclusive development of the Internet (the so-called Internet Bill of Rights or Internet Rights Code).
The first edition of the Forum, organized together with the United Nations, featured participants from 70 countries and 53 governmental delegations. During the last IGF in Rio de Janeiro, it obtained an acknowledgment from the United Nations and registered the interest of many Countries, in particular Brazil, with whom Italy signed a Joint Declaration.
On this basis, we trust that DFIR2 will bring about further adhesions to this initiative and new formal commitments by Governments and other stakeholders in support of the process of defining Internet rights.
The Forum will be opened by the Minister for Public Administration and Innovation, Renato Brunetta, and by the President of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Renato Soru. A panel session dedicated to the present situation and future developments of the Net will follow.
The afternoon session will be focused on international experiences related to the themes of Internet rights and initiatives connected to the Internet Bill of Rights. Both panels will be followed by an open debate.
The results of the DFIR2 works will be presented at the next United Nations Internet Governance Forum meeting, which will take place in Hyderabad, in December 2008.
The official languages of the meeting will be English and Italian.
